Creative People and Places

10 Year Celebration

#CreateYourPlace

In celebration of the tenth anniversary of Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places programme, we’ve been looking back at some of our incredible projects that have made such a difference to the individuals and communities in Doncaster that Right Up Our Street has worked with.

Right Up Our Street was formed in 2012 and is funded by Art Council England’s Creative People and Places programme and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. We are so proud to have been delivering activity in Doncaster for 10 years, with so much more to come!

Creative People and Places projects like Right Up Our Street have empowered communities across the country to take the lead in deciding what creative activities they want and need.

With over 12 million engagements and £108 million investment nationally in the programme since its launch by Arts Council England in 2012, Creative People and Places projects have a wide-ranging positive impact on individuals and communities in parts of the country where involvement in creativity and culture is significantly below the national average.

Creative People and Places has grown from 6 to 39 projects over the last 10 years. These projects cover 56 local authority areas from Blackpool to Barrow; from Great Yarmouth to St Helens, from Luton to Bradford; from County Durham to Doncaster; from Sunderland to Sedgemoor. See the full list of places here.

Over the next three years, Arts Council England is investing £38.3 million in Creative People and Places through National Lottery funding, so more communities can choose the creativity and culture on offer in their local area. We hope to continue providing exciting arts activity designed by, with and for people from Right Up Our Street.

COMMUNITY VOICE

Doncaster’s Community Voice is essential to the delivery of the programme. Whether you’re a participant, audience member, volunteer or team member, your words help shape what we do.

The Community Advisors support Right Up Our Street to develop a programme that is right for its community and to check that it achieves its aims.

This includes sharing with Right Up Our Street what its communities need and want; taking part in choosing which artists Right Up Our Street will work with; volunteering on the Festival Steering Group; and building their own knowledge and skills through training, visits and events.

The group meet every three months to advise us on the current and future programming.

Participants and Audience Members

Throughout the 10 years we have also survey’d our audience members and participants to collect their feedback. We’ve collated some of our favourite comments from the last year.

Partnerships

Partnership work is at the forefront of Right Up Our Street’s programming. Right Up Our Street have been lucky to work with so many incredible partners throughout the 10 years of the programme.

You can see all the fantastic community partners we have worked with on our 10 Year Celebration webpage through the individual projects we have delivered.

Thank you to all the partners we have collaborated with throughout the decade. We could not run the project successfully without a strong relationship with our partners across Doncaster.

Economic and Social Impact

Right Up Our Street have brought the DN Festival of Light to Doncaster’s City Centre for four years running, bringing Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon, Novak’s Tectonic, Heinrich & Palmer’s The Crossing Place and most recently Guillaume Marmin’s 1.3 Seconds alongside Greenaway & Greenaway’s WE RISE.

The DN Festival of Light has been a beautiful way to celebrate communities, businesses, people and places in Doncaster and bring them together.

In our most recent DN Festival of Light we collaborated with Doncaster Minster and the Doncaster Markets Team encouraging audiences of the festival to come inside the incredible building that is the Minster and visit the fantastic Wool Market and see their offer of food and activity.

In the opening of the festival we invited the Muslim Hunafa Scout Group to perform their opening ceremony dance for our VIP’s. It was really special to be able to share the talented scout group’s performance with other community members we had invited. It was a perfect celebration of what Right Up Our Street represents.

Dickinson Wood sponsored our Free Family Activities in the Wool Market which enabled Karen Hall and Print Imperials to run craft and Print workshops during the festival.

Learning

For our 10 Year Anniversary we asked the question “In your opinion, how does having a project like Right Up Our Street benefit the borough of Doncaster?” to participants, previous Right Up Our Street team members, community members and artists who have been on this learning journey with us.
