Artist: Dan Jones, Janet Wood, Moony Wainwright, Dance on (darts), Shaun Clarke, Rachel Carter, Chelsea Lord (Skillshare) Periplum
Partners: DMBC, Austerfield Study Centre, Bawtry Cadets, Bawtry Community Theatre Group Phoenix
About: We were approached by DMBC and asked to support the community of Austerfield and Bawtry to deliver YR3 of the Bawtry and Austerfield Illuminate Festival in the lead up to the Mayflower 400.
The previous 2 events had been delivered with the support of the Council, but they were keen to see the project upscaled. To meet with the vision and purpose of our project we expanded the event to include a broader community reach, involving groups and schools from across the borough.
As a result the event became a far reaching education project regarding the Pilgrim Fathers, their journey across the Pacific as well as more modern day themes such as sustainability and environmentalism.
The programme involved 3 x workshops across 4x schools, Everton, Bawtry Mayflower, Coppice and Hatfield Woodhouse.
Dan Jones created a whale made entirely from plastic bottles which the schools have recycled. (The DJ will also run sessions in the Bawtry library.) Janet Wood & Moony Wainwright worked with the same 4x schools to create musical pieces writing songs and using percussion instruments to feature in the parade – behind the whale.
Lanterns were made by Austerfield study centre with the same 4x schools. Then paraded behind the whale.
Dance on (Darts) will host a ‘Under the Sea Ball’ in Bawtry Hall and bring participants from their existing engaged areas. Pottery and macramé workshops collaborating with Doncaster Heritage.
Pottery – Shaun Clarke - Stainforth Hub 1x session.
Macramé - Rachel Carter x8 sessions. 4x Darts and 4x Balby Library with Chelsea Lord - from Skillshare.
