Right Up Our Street 〰️ 10 Year Anniversary 〰️ Read 2 Write 〰️ 2017-Present 〰️

Read 2 Write originated as one of our Priority Areas Community groups, covering both Balby and Mexborough. The group was led by talented poets Mick Jenkinson and Ian Parks and throughout time have accumulated around 25 members. The group meet regularly at Balby library (and online during the pandemic) and have produced beautiful work for us during their time as a group.

The group continues to grow and is welcoming to all. If you are interested in joining the group, have a look at their Facebook Page to see how you can get involved. https://www.facebook.com/groups/350634061950583/announcements

Below are examples of their body of work throughout the years and some highlights of poetry performances and readings they have collectively done across the borough.

A View From a Locked-Down Land

During the first lockdown in 2020, Read 2 Write, a community led group of Doncaster based poets moved their weekly Balby Library and Mexborough group meetings online, in a continued effort to create and discuss poetry and stay bonded as a group during the pandemic. Together with Read 2 Write we have worked to capture and celebrate some of their creativity.

Along with a number of recognised guest poets, members of the group were invited to submit two poems that would go on to feature within a new printed anthology  ‘View From a Locked-Down Land’.

An Inside View From a Locked-Down Land

The printed anthology ‘A View From a Locked-Down Land’ was delivered to Care Homes across Doncaster along with questions, to give the residents an opportunity to engage with the poems and reply with their thoughts. Their written thoughts were then be passed along to our poets at Read2Write for them to write beautiful poetry inspired by the Care Home residents words.

‘An Inside View From a Locked-Down Land’ is our second poetry anthology book, featuring the collaboration of our fantastic Poets at Read2Write and the wonderful residents of the Care Homes across Doncaster.

Lippy Women

The very first performance by some of R2W’s intrepid “Lippy Women” was Friday 13th 2020. Since then they have headlined at March’s Well Spoken, and Zoomed a few weeks ago at the Tuesday evening session run by Mick Jenkinson and Tim Fellows.

“Unleash the lip” was what Ian Parks tasked them with at the outset.
