About John Beal

Born and bred in Mexborough and it is still a resident in the house he was born in many moons ago.

John has Mexborough running through his blood and is person with a passion for creative writing and cinema. As chair of the amazing Cosy Cinema, founder member of the Ted Hughes Poetry Festival and core member of Read to Write he has brought so much cultural delight to others.

John’s walk starts in his living room with a view onto Doncaster Road and beyond. The same room his was born in, the room his family would take the last of the photos from a holiday film roll every year. We then move onto the Glassby Arch a treasure of Mexborough that acted as a catalyst to spark a young imagination.

“It was a pleasure to walk and reminisce about my early life, and where my inspiration derived from. The locations we visited have a real sense of genius loci and lots of important memories which it was a great pleasure to share. The words that Helen chose for the poem to go with the pictures seemed to be particularly resonant and seemed to be appreciated by the crowd as well as myself.”
