A Spring Message From Right Up Our Street

It’s been a busy start to the year here at Right Up Our Street and we want to thank all our subscribers for the continued support.

As we were successful in another three years of funding, we have been busy planning, writing, consulting with our community advisors and of course finishing our final projects from the year.

There are lots of exciting things to look forward to in the next three years. Be sure to follow us on social media so you don’t miss out.

#DepictionsofDN on Tour

Depictions of DN started as a social media campaign where we asked the Doncaster Community to nominate key workers or people who have gone above and beyond during the pandemic.

11 of these key workers were selected to take part in a film by James Lockey, which was accompanied by a musical score written by Hayley Youell. Working in partnership with the South Yorkshire Police Band, The Doncaster Choral Society and the Swag/Swaglets Choir (darts).

We brought the Depictions of DN film out into communities in Doncaster using an LED screen on a Van provided by Select Events.

During the tour we took the van to Thorne, The Doncaster Deaf Trust, ASDA, Town Field Primary School and Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Thank you to everyone who let us visit and helped us spread the Depictions of DN joy.

Whilst we were out touring the film, we were lucky enough to chat to some members of the public to get their thoughts on the film. Watch the film below to see what the community thought about the film. Watch the Vox Pop’s here.

Mexborough Cosy Cinema

On Sunday 27th of March we premiered Right Up Our Street's film series chronicling the history and future of cinema in Mexborough #CosyCinema.

Each short film in the series explored what cinema means to Mexborough - whether it's the community it builds, the importance of its history in the town, or the possibilities for young people it can still hold. Chapter Three features an interview Mexborough Legend Brian Blessed.

We showed the series in its entirety before the regularly scheduled screening by Cosy Cinema.

The series was filmed, edited and produced by David Sanchez and Lauren Townsend. The films are available to watch on our YouTube Channel here.

For more information on how the film series came together, please visit our website.

“The cinemas there in Mexborough were the talk of the town, they inspired me to be an actor. So, I owe everything to Mexborough. I got a scholarship there. I got awards there. I got marvellous teachers. Harry Dobson - the greatest director I’ve ever worked with in my life.” - Brian Blessed

Bentley Community Choir | Mask of Hope Performance

During the pandemic, The Bentley Community Choir were not able to meet with their choir leader Sharon Richards like usual.

Working with Sharon, we sent out two letters to members of the choir with prompts, to give them an opportunity to reflect and respond to the questions.

The responses would then be used by Sharon to write a song - ‘Stand Up’.

We had the pleasure of attending the Bentley Community Choir performance at the Jubilee Hall and it was fantastic! The choir, performed several songs including a couple from ‘The Bentley Song Book’ and the group also sang their Mask of Hope song ‘Stand Up’. It was lovely finally hear the choir perform ‘Stand Up’ together after time away from lockdown.

A big well done to the choir and the team, it was a fantastic evening.
