2022 Retrospective

Our Projects in 2022

Depictions of DN on Tour

We brought the Depictions of DN film out into communities in Doncaster using an LED screen on a Van provided by Select Events.

During the tour we took the van to Thorne, The Doncaster Deaf Trust, ASDA, Town Field Primary School and Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Thank you to everyone who let us visit and helped us spread the Depictions of DN joy.

Mask of Hope Performance

Bentley Community Choir

We had the pleasure of attending the Bentley Community Choir performance at the Jubilee Hall and it was fantastic! The choir, led by Sharon Richards, performed several songs including a couple from ‘The Bentley Song Book’ and the group also sang their Mask of Hope song ‘Stand Up’. It was lovely finally hear the choir perform ‘Stand Up’ together after time away from lockdown.

A big well done to the choir and the team, it was a fantastic evening.

Film by David Sanchez.

Cosy Memories Film Series

Cosy Memories is a film project we are in the process of creating with Lauren Townsend and David Sànchez along with local heritage groups, stemming from past projects with Cosy Cinema.

We are engaging with older members of the Mexborough Community including those living in Care Homes and asking for memories they may have in association with the nine cinemas that used to be around in Mexborough.

We, in turn, made a series of films using their responses. The films will then be used as trailers for Cosy Cinema before their film screenings.

You’re Reyt Up Our Street

with Molly Jones

We commissioned illustrator Molly Jones to create a Wall Mural for #RUOSHQ. Since the design of the ‘You’re Reyt Up Our Street’ mural, we have used the imagery across several projects.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

To commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the Queen we wanted to give you to the opportunity to add a creative activity to your own celebrations. All you needed to do is download the files, print and get colouring in!

The Crowns and Placemats made it to several community groups across Doncaster.

The Wayfarer People

A series of walks captured through words, film and images with people and their places.

Wayfarer People explores the ghosts of our memories that are connected to the landscape and urban environments we live in or once did.

A Project by Helen Mort, James Lockey & Dominic Somers.

Bawtry Arts Festival

Molly Jones was our Artist in Residence for Bawtry Arts Festival and illustrated a large map of Bawtry and encouraged the people of Bawtry to draw their own home and add it to the growing map.

On the weekend days we were joined by the team at Print Imperials, a local Doncaster Print Maker during the arts festival.

Print Imperial’s did a range of print activities on the days, including a drop in screen printing workshop where the community of Bawtry could get hands on with printing their own cards and using the images created during the week by Molly to show how you can produce a T-shirt using direct to garment printing or sublimation.

Tickhill Scout Gala

This year we supported The Tickhill Scout Gala by bringing String & Strong by Fully Booked Theatre and the Vegetable Nannies by Plunge & Boom to the Gala.

Memory Lane | Children of the Night

In July 2022 we hosted ‘Memory Lane’, a Children of the Night Research Project.

“Join us for an evening of food, music, & reminiscing as we go down memory lane and share our stories of the Black experience of Doncaster nightlife between 1970 - 2000.

Where were the best spots, who were the hottest DJs, what are the stories you keep retelling years later?

Do you have any items from your heydays: drinks menus, event posters, bar mats, or ticket stubs that you've kept years later -  your stories and memorabilia could be included in an exhibition celebrating the history of Doncaster's nightlife scene next Spring.”

London Go-See, Festival Steering Group

We had a fabulous day taking our Festival Steering Group to London to see the 180 Future Shock Exhibition to inspire future DN Festival of Light’s. Thank you for the continued support and insight team.

Artist in Residence with Jamie Bubb

We announced this year that we would be doing a three year long artist in Residence on the Balby Bridge Estate.

This year the Residency went to Jamie Bubb, a portrait photographer based in Doncaster and specialises in photographing ordinary people.

10 Year Anniversary Announcement

Right Up Our Street was formed in 2012 and is funded by Art Council England’s Creative People and Places programme and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. We are so proud to have been delivering activity in Doncaster for 10 years, with so much more to come!

Check out our website where we are reflecting and celebrating all the projects we have delivered within the 10 years. We want to thank and celebrate all past and present artists, team members, volunteers and the community for supporting the programme. Without you there is no RUOS!

The Scout Olympics

Right Up Our Street supported the 71st Hunafa Scouts in their performance for the 2022 Scout Olympics opening ceremony. The Hunafa Scout’s are a local scout group based in Doncaster that caters to the Muslim community, but is open to all.

We had the fantastic Hayley Beecher on board to manage the project and the talented Nathan Geering & Leigh Redhead as the project artists to help deliver what the scouts want for their performance.

Hayley, Nathan and Leigh visited the Scouts regularly to get to know the group and understand what they wanted to perform for the opening ceremony. Together they created a beautiful performance piece that they had put together collaboratively.

Thoughts Formed

A collection of images and films created by local artist James Lockey. Each film was created in response to his conversations with Thorne & Moorends’ very own Monday Smile A While Group.

Thoughts Formed originally was an Research & Development project funded by Right Up Our Street in 2020. This project gave James the opportunity to explore new ways of collaborating with people and the chance to push himself creatively, resulting in a new way of working.

From the start James was interested in getting the thoughts on the current situation from people that he thought to be underrepresented in the media, notably the voice of asylum seekers, refugees and the elderly.

WE RISE by Greenaway & Greenaway

DN Festival of Light 2022

Greenaway & Greenaway created a spectacle that was commissioned by Right Up Our Street for the DN Festival of Light artwork which was projected on the Corn Exchange. This piece was about telling the story of Doncaster through the eyes of the people, creating a unique film.

1. 3 Seconds by Guillaume Marmin

DN Festival of Light 2022

This light installation by Guillaume Marmin gets its name from the time it takes for light to travel from the earth to the moon at a velocity of 300,000km/s. The contrast between the darkness and flashes of light immersed you in an almost overwhelming experience that intends to play with the perception of the existing space. The light work highlighted the Minster's columns, stained glass windows and overall gothic style, giving you glimpses of architectural details as lights flash and illuminate the grand space.

Community Advisors

The Community Advisors support Right Up Our Street to develop a programme that is right for its community and to check that it achieves its aims.

This will include sharing with Right Up Our Street what its communities need and want; taking part in choosing which artists Right Up Our Street will work with; volunteering on the Festival Steering Group; and building their own knowledge and skills through training, visits and events.

The group meet every three months.
