2023 Retrospective

Our Projects in 2023

Rob Lee Mural - Central Family Hub

In 2022 Right Up Our Street were successful in receiving one of the Space 2 Create grants in Doncaster and used it to contribute to part of their three year commitment to get to know the community on the Balby St. James Estate.

Working with artist Rob Lee and Doncaster Central Family Hub, we created a wall mural on the side of the Central Family Hub building.

Brass Band - ‘Ave A Go Day

Whether you were currently playing, a former player, or even if you had never tried your hand at playing a brass instrument before - Doncaster had the opportunity to ‘Ave a Go!’

A special one-off chance to be inspired to get into this cultural pastime that predominated Doncaster's entertainment for many years gone by.

Doncaster's Premier Brass Band - the Hatfield & Askern Colliery Band - hosted an "Ave a' Go” day on Sunday 22nd January 2023. The band even gave us a free live performance at the Wool Market.

Moths at Work - Pif-Paf Theatre

Two Moth Electricians from Pif-Paf Theatre Toured the streets of Doncaster in four localities, Adwick, Rossington, Hexthorpe & Barnby Dun, spreading light and joy to the community.

There was plenty of dancing, sending things to the moon and lots of laughs to entertain some local areas in Doncaster.

Off the Shelf - GSD & Read2Write

Community organisation GSD (General Social Development) were approached by Right Up Our Street to develop a project supported by Off the Shelf Festival of Words, to create something that’s important to them as a group, a wider movement, or feels relevant to the new City of Doncaster. GSD collaborated with Balby and Mexborough’s Read 2 Write poetry group for the project.

GSD and Read 2 Write came together on Friday 27th of January 6pm-8pm at the Unitarian Church for a Free performance, to share their work with a wider audience.

Mystery Bird

Mystery Bird came to Doncaster in February 2023.

Mystery Bird is an illuminated bird cage with a magical soundtrack that will travel along the streets of your area, before coming to a halt and setting a magical projection of birds free across your homes and buildings.

The Poetry Takeaway

For Doncaster’s Remake Learning Festival.

“Our diverse group of talented Poet Chefs provide high quality personalised poetry for guests and visitors, written performed and delivered free, all from our mobile Poetry Emporium, The Poetry Takeaway.

The process starts with an initial discussion, taking the order, gathering ingredients, we aim to complete the poem quickly, it is carefully crafted, written and performed, wrapped up and sent on it’s journey.

We guarantee everything from tears, laughter and everything in between.”

A massive thank you to all the poets who shared their creativity with us over the weekend. Smiles, laughter and tears were all guaranteed!

Hixxy - Deaf Community Centre

Right Up Our Street commissioned Street Artist Hixxy to create and paint a new mural for the Doncaster Deaf Society on the Balby Bridge Estate. This artwork was funded by Round Two of the Doncaster Space 2 Create Fund.

Faces of Balby Bridge - Artist in Residence

A celebration of the photography pop-up exhibition by Jamie Bubb, starring the people of Balby Bridge.

It was a wonderful day celebrating Jamie’s year-long artist in residence with the residents of the Balby Bridge Estate. It was beautiful to be able to share Jamie’s collaboration with the estate, share stories together and celebrate the community.

Free activities were be provided by The Family Hub team, alongside craft activities with Karen Hall. Sarup from Awesome Faces came along and Face Painted and there was free ice cream!

Into the Park

Into the Park was a free family fun day out involving walkabout piece ‘Out of the Deep Blue’.

Right Up Our Street brought Into the Park to two outdoor locations in August. Campsall Country Park and Hexthorpe Flatts Park.

There were free puppet making workshops, pond dipping activities from Don Catchment Rivers Trust, sport activities from Get Doncaster Moving and face painting, plus lots more!

The Album

‘The Album’ was a short running Research & Development (R&D) Project led by Visual Artist Andrew Mitchell. With Asylum Seekers and Refugees being one of our Priority Communities selected by our Community Advisors, Andrew worked on this project collaboratively with The Conversation Club.

Doncaster Festival of Light

This year Right Up Our Street showcased three artworks inside the Minster from Universal Everything. Universal Everything are a collective of media artists, experienced designers and future makers.

For the opening weekend only there were additional artworks in the grounds of the Minster.

Community Advisors

The Community Advisors support Right Up Our Street to develop a programme that is right for its community and to check that it achieves its aims.

This includes sharing with Right Up Our Street what its communities need and want; taking part in choosing which artists Right Up Our Street will work with; volunteering on the Festival Steering Group; and building their own knowledge and skills through training, visits and events.

This year, the group met every three months. Check out the webpage to see where we visited with the Community Advisors.

Festival Steering Group

The Festival Steering Group is made up of a variety of partners and community members who help shape the DN Festival of Light programme with the team.

The Festival Steering Group met quarterly this year and went on a Go-See to the lluminarium.

Doncaster Festival of Light Branding with Sail Creative

This year Sail Creative worked with the Festival Steering Group to establish a brand for the Doncaster Festival of Light. Mandy visited us in Doncaster to get to know the group and our intentions for the Doncaster Festival of Light.

We now have a brand we can use consistently for the Festival that represents who we are and what we want to deliver to Doncaster.
